Chapter 15

Sparks of magic fizzled and died like a passing of fireflies. Abrasive energy flooded the room, along with the stink of sweat-matted fur.

Chesna yanked hard on the amulet’s tether.

The connection severed at the edges, ripping along the length—

A bloody blur of a werewolf knocked into Chesna. They flew into the corner of the large desk and bounced hard into the wall. I yelled into the vortex of snarls and cries of pain that filled the too-small room, but I couldn’t move. Couldn’t do a fucking damn thing but remain open to Chesna as she clung onto the cord even as Reiner tore into her.

Then her grip started to slip…

In the absence of Chesna’s magic, the severed parts of the cord knitted themselves together instantly. Only a corner of it remained fractured, and the thinnest veil covered the gaping maw, preventing my essence from being dragged right back into the vacuum—

Chesna screamed.

I tilted my head, but all I saw was fur and blood and Chesna’s thrashing form trapped beneath Reiner, her magic visible as it lashed at the rampant werewolf.

Her hold on the amulet’s tether reduced to the smallest touch.

We couldn’t go down like this.

Even if I fucking died, I’d save Chesna.

With a calming breath, I slid my metaphysical hands past her magic and toward my power—

A blast scorched the air.

It slammed into Reiner’s flank with cruel brutality, and my ethereal fingers disintegrated as I watched him fly into the bookshelves. Books toppled off their shelves, and Viva barged into the office like a vengeful spirit, her eyes blazing with white-hot fury.

She fired at Reiner again, but I hardly saw the hit as my gaze caught on the pool of crimson creeping toward me. I traced it to Chesna’s sprawled body. Her limbs lay at awkward angles, her face bruised and battered, her flowing dress wet with blood.

Had Reiner—

Her eyes flew open. Chesna locked her gaze on mine, then, with a surge of power so strong I tasted it on the back of my tongue, she sliced through the cord.

My entire body deflated. A loud crash rocked through the office, and I barely looked in time to see Reiner’s wolfish form disappear from the other side of the broken window.

No, no, no, the word rampaged through my mind, but my body was too spent to rush after the bastard. And Viva…

She knelt beside Chesna, her magic flowing outward and cocooning the woman she loved.

Blood continued to flow from Chesna’s wounds, and I caught glimpses of raw flesh where Reiner had torn into her. Chesna whimpered, then fell silent.

My breath froze, congealed in my lungs, then everything within me thrashed as Viva’s back hunched, her hands previously full of magic falling flat into her lap.

Chesna couldn’t be dead. She fucking couldn’t.

I plunged within me, grabbing hold of my power to send it hurtling into the witch, but just as eddies of it curved around my fingers, Viva’s shuddering breath halted me in my tracks. Like some kind of thawing, her muscles relaxed and her magic rose once more, flowing into Chesna at a steadier, calmer rate.
